The boos that serenaded USC off the field at the Coliseum on Saturday night weren’t directed at Trojans quarterback Cody Kessler, who threw the screen pass on third and 2 against Washington State. Nor were they intended for Marqise Lee, who grabbed the pass only to immediately retreat backward and scramble about behind the line of scrimmage before getting tackled well short of the first down. Kessler and Lee were simply carrying out orders, and the home-opening crowd that packed the Coliseum knew neither was to blame for the conservative call. No, these boos were meant for one man and one man only. And he just happened to be standing on the USC sideline, laminated play sheet in hand and perplexed look on his face. That would be USC coach Lane Kiffin, of course.
And it didn’t take Trojans fans long to turn their anger full blast on Kiffin, who couldn’t even escape the first half of the first quarter before feeling the wrath. After one too many bubble screens on top of four wobbly quarters against Hawaii on top of a terrible performance last year in the Sun Bowl on top of an utterly mediocre 2012 season, USC fans had enough when Lee fell short of the first down. And they let Kiffin have it. In the first quarter, later on in the second.
And as he left the field at halftime after his Trojans managed a measly 71 yards and seven points in two forgettable quarters. He deserved it to be sure.
What sounds like an exercise in LCD screen minutiae makes for some dramatic changes: It means less glare, better viewing angles and a touch more. Last year left a humongous bad taste in everyone’s mouth and the indecision in naming a No. 1 quarterback this year doesn’t help. Meanwhile, USC fans used to wide-open offenses with stars like Reggie Bush and Carson Palmer and Mike Williams and Matt Leinart and Matt Barkley lighting up the L.A. Skyline and the Coliseum scoreboard just can’t wrap their arms around the conservative, almost timid play calling Kiffin has kicked off 2013 with — a trend he started last year when a lack of faith in a young offensive line and the need to protect Barkley dulled his previously aggressive instincts.
Bush broke off 71 yards all by himself with one touch of the ball. Lee is absolutely capable of doing the same — and has. You’re darn right fans are angry when Kiffin can’t even dial up 100 yards of offense in one half with the skills players he has at his disposal. To which I say, get used to it, guys. If Kiffin was hesitant to throw the ball down the field with Barkley sharing the same field as Lee and Robert Woods, it seems farfetched he’d regain his swagger with young Kessler and Max Wittek behind center. Neither Kessler nor Wittek has taken hold of the quarterback position, and after watching them play through two games it isn’t hard to understand why. They aren’t ready to be the guy.

Kessler completed 8 of 13 passes in the first half for 41 yards — his longest completion actually going to the Cougars when he misread the coverage intentions of Washington State cornerback Damante Horton and threw in the direction of Nelson Agholor, only for Horton to sidestep Agholor, grab the ball and then race 70 yards for a touchdown. Obviously Kessler has a long way to go. And he’s drawn the first two starts to begin the season, which may tell us all we need to know about Wittek. Point is, USC is hurting at quarterback. That may change.
The season is young. Their careers are just getting started. Somewhere down the line, one might take control of the job and Kiffin’s play calling will reflect that development. And so will the scoreboard. It all remains to be seen. But for now, Kiffin is just trying to win games.
By any means necessary. And if he has to do that in spite of the limitations of Kessler and Wittek, it means careful game plans, low-risk throws to Lee, a lot of run plays and some big-time leaning of a defense that looks vastly improved from last season.
That might not be fun for the fans. The Coliseum might not be as electric as in years past.
And certainly the Trojans’ margin of error will be razor thin without the ability to pile on opponents with skills players on top of skill players and a sure-armed quarterback able to get them the ball. But it’s all Kiffin’s got right now. And when you’re on the hot seat like he is, you do what you have to do. The interception Kessler threw came with 27 seconds left in the half and tied the score at 7-7, and it perfectly illustrates why Kiffin has gone so conservative all of a sudden — and why he should stick to it. Leading 7-0, Kiffin should have accepted his good fortunate and headed to the locker room with the seven-point advantage.
Instead he got aggressive, hoping to add to the lead. But with Kessler not yet capable of directing such a high-leverage drive, the plan backfired and USC found itself in a tie game against the Cougars. The fans booed, of course.
But hopefully they were paying attention. The play calling reflects the quarterback right now.
